Prayer

Prayer is a basic element of the Christian Faith. In essence, prayer is a function by which we develop a relationship with our Creator. Prayer is simple enough that the newest believer practices it and complex enough that no believer will ever master it. For in prayer we are mastered by, and changed through, our communion with the Creator. Yet oftentimes prayer is not easy thing for us to be devoted to. Our culture teaches us that gathering and relaying of information are of paramount value. Because of this it is easy for us to seek out information about God and about prayer, but feel uncomfortable with the childlike exploration of relationship. Prayer is communicating with our living God. At times it is the formal standing before the throne of the King. Yet at other times it is intensely intimate, as if we're spending time with a lover. This depth of relationship can be seen all throughout Scripture in the prayers of the people of Israel, Moses, Daniel, David, and a host of others including our Lord.

When we look through the gospels and examine Jesus' life we see that is marked by prayer. In the gospels there are over eighteen references to Jesus praying. With that in mind, it is no surprise to see the question the disciples ask in Luke. "Now Jesus was praying in a certain place and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, 'Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples'" (Luke 11:1 NIV). What a powerful request! Does not your heart scream to join in? Jesus taught them to pray by example and instruction. To follow Christ's example, discipleship goes beyond teaching people about God. It includes taking them by the hand and showing them how to meet with Him.

The desire of the Prayer Ministry is to gather together people who will, by deliberate action, work to keep prayer at the center of our corporate life. This ministry will be done by providing opportunities for corporate prayer, as well as working to facilitate the continued development of the individual and family prayer life of the church. I would like to ask each of you reading this to prayerfully consider serving our brothers and sisters in this effort.
